The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Thursday, distributed relief materials worth millions of naira to victims of 2022 flood disaster across the 33 local government in Oyo State to ameliorate their suffering.

The items donated includes: Bags of Garri, Soghum, bags of 10kg maize, seasoning cubes, nylon mats, guinea brocade, and other perishable staple foods.

Speaking at the occasion of the items’s distribution to Local Government Chairmen at OYSEMA Ware House behind Ministry of Finance Building Secretariat, Ibadan, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Abdul-raheem Adebayo Lawal said Governor Seyi Makinde approved the release of the relief materials to the state as part of the Federal Government efforts to address the needs of the citizens in difficult times.

Lawal, who is also the Chairman of the Agency, noted that the Government is responding to the needs of its teeming populace who have been in the recent past traumatized by the prevailing flood hazards in their communities as well as re-affirming the beliefs and confidence repose on them as a listening Government who shares in the pains of her people.

According to him, “Today, the State Government, under the amiable leadership of His Excellency is highly motivated to avail the vulnerable and flood victims, spread across the entire state, massive relief materials to mitigate the unsavory impacts of Flood Disasters on them either Rainstorm or Flood do not respect creed, place, religion, or genders in our polity.

“Everybody is at the risk of exposure and vulnerability. Consequently, the state government is guided by community-based approach and grassroots focus in distribution of the several foods and non-food items worth over millions of Naira as relief packages to the affected victims across the 33 LGAs in the State.”

He reiterated that the people’s government is leaving no stone unturned in its developmental efforts to all ramifications, having realized that the strong nexus between development and disaster event, the State Government stand firmly on strengthening infrastructural and capacity resilience, food security, maintenance of law and order and crime reduction.

He disclosed that Governor Makinde in his commitment to effective operation of the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) to boost the resilience of the state to disaster risks, graciously approved procurement of two New Hilux Vehicles for smooth operations of the Agency.

“As a mark of appreciation, the synergy and collaborative efforts of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) can not be underscored as far as the State resilience is concerned.

“The State would not hesitate to further the frontiers of our bilateral relationships, likewise with other State and Non-State Actors in the state. We are the stakeholders that can ginger high level of preparedness and professionalism while reducing damage and loses in our society.”

“More so, my candid advice to the good citizenry of our dear State is to be conscious and vigilant of the changing climatic condition in our environment and it is therefore expedient that our society should discourage indiscriminate dumping of refuse, building on flood plains and arbitrary felling of trees.”

“At this juncture, my good people of Oyo State, you are vehemently encouraged to allow continuity of this present administration as a golden cheese that can continue to entrench sustainable pathways for Oyo State Government. This is achievable when we unite to support His Excellency, Seyi Makinde in his re-election bid for second term in 2023”, he added.

The agency’s Secretary, Mr. Opatunbi Femi Lawrence, stated earlier in his remarks that the State Government, led by Engineer Seyi Makinde, does express its sympathies and condolences to its citizens whose precious assets were damaged in one tragedy or another in the State.

Lawrence reaffirmed that calamity is an unavoidable occurrence that happens suddenly, and that whenever it does, it is the duty of any responsive and responsible government to respond to the needs of the victims. Accordingly, the current administration in Oyo state decided it was appropriate to provide relief materials to the affected people as a means of easing their feelings.

He stressed that the action was borne out of the decisive, timely, response and collective will of the present administration to always cater for the welfare of the citizenry.

The secretary also took advantage of the occasion to express his gratitude to the Deputy Governor and agency chairman, Bayo Lawal, for accommodating the program despite his busy schedule and for his numerous efforts to ensure that urgent matters are handled swiftly.

As part of his ongoing efforts to ensure that other phases of relief materials are distributed to vulnerable and other victims, the Deputy Governor also made sure that Governor Seyi Makinde approved a whopping sum of 45 million naira for the purchase of two vehicles.

He equally appreciated the efforts and co-operation of National Emergency Management (NEMA) by always complimenting the efforts of the State Government and other stakeholders who are working day and night to make the state less prone to disaster risk, e.g State/Federal Fire services, Civil Defense, Nigerian Police, the Military, Red Cross, etc.

During his remarks, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy matters, Hon. Olasukanmi Olaleye, insisted that someone should be assigned the duty of disseminating the information and emphasized that everyone should get involved.

He said their involvement would make them have enough information for where the material should go while also advising that they should not be political with the distribution but must ensure that it get across those who really needed it.

He expressed his deep appreciation to the Government of Oyo State for its thoughtfulness to get a relief materials distributed to the vulnerable and flood victims.
