The Oyo State Fire Service has revealed that the fire which gutted the popular Bodija Market in Ibadan, was a result of high power voltage and storage of inflammable products.
While speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, the Director of Operations, Oyo State Fire Service, Ismail Adeleke; who stated that the agency was still investigating the main cause of the incident, disclosed that the fire incident was intensified by many jerry cans of stored petrol in some shops in the market.
Adeleke added that in the course of the operation, his men discovered that grinding machines were in most of the shops with some kegs of petrol, which contributed to the spread of the inferno.
He further noted that the agency responded quickly with a 27,000-litre capacity truck with water to the market and started putting the fire under control.
According to him, another 10,000-litre capacity truck also joined in the operation to finally put out the fire.
Recall that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that over 100 shops were destroyed at Ori-Igi Lane in the market, while millions of properties were lost.
