For evacuation of wastes and flood control in the State, the Oyo State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project(OYO NEWMAP) has purchased 1,000 trolley bins, 15 tricycle machines and an Amphibious Excavator.
According to the Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Abiodun Oni, this is in a bid to maintain a cleaner and healthier Oyo State, and the items will be distributed and made available to all communities within the State, and the Oyo NEWMAP building will be commissioned soon for proper activities.
The Commissioner also noted that the efforts were made possible through the World Bank-Assisted Project Intervention, with counterpart funding from the Oyo State Government as part of the many support programmes under the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project.
He explained that the trolley bins and tricycle machines would serve the purpose of wastes collection from nooks and crannies in the State to appropriate dumping sites where the Amphibious Excavators will be situated for desisting and channeling of streams and rivers.
In his words, “Governor Seyi Makinde’s mandate is to ensure that the citizens of this State live in a clean and safe environment, It’s highly imperative for residents to appreciate and adopt the State Government’s programme on waste management which would be of benefit to all and sundry, all hands must be on deck to ensure we assist this administration to achieve its aims on changing people’s attitude to waste disposal as this government would not tolerate acts of dumping refuse inside drainages and rivers which lead to flooding.”
This is to ensure proper and effective waste management practices, avoid gully erosions and protect the environment.
