Two student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Taoheed Oyewo and Ayanwole Emmanuel have won the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award held in Texas.

Newsmen reports that ‘Team pathfinder’ from LAUTECH and two teams from UNILAG were shortlisted from Nigeria to participate at the competition.

Other international institutions that also participated at the 2023 Global Design health Competition include; Stanford University, University of Michigan, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Rochester, Saint Louis University, University of Los Andes, Case Western Reserve University, University of Pennsylvania and Bangladesh University of Georgia Institute of Technology.

The Rice University Institute for Global Health Technologies’ 13th Annual Undergraduate Global Health Technologies Design Competition featured various student teams from national and international universities who presented low-cost technologies they have designed to address global health challenges in resource-limited settings.

The 2023 Competition was hosted on April 21st, 2023, on the Rice University Campus in Houston, Texas, with virtual participation options also available to student teams.

Speaking with newsmen on Saturday, the Pathfinder team leader, Mr Oyewo said that they applied for the competition around January this year and got shortlisted in March and proceeded to the semi- final and the final was yesterday.

Oyewo, a student of Mechanical Engineering (lead innovator), and his colleague from same department, Emmanuel Ayawole, further disclosed that they competed with both national and international universities to win the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award in the just Concluded 2023 Annual Global Health Design Challenge.

While expressing his profound gratitude to the team supervisor, Professor Tesleem Asafa of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, LAUTECH, he noted that they presented a Disability Inclusive Latrine PAN (DILPAN), a modified pit-latrine system that simultaneously addresses Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and offers users a hygienic and inclusive toilet solution.

He added that the team was also a WINNER of Young Nigeria Innovative Competition, a competition organised by The Nigerian Society of Engineers – Headquarters(NSE) at the just concluded 2022 National Engineering Conference and Exhibition, Abuja.
