In a ground-breaking initiative aimed at enhancing livestock productivity and resilience in Oyo State, the Oyo State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), in collaboration with Union Agric Services Limited, organised a two-day training workshop titled “Digital Extension and Advisory Services: Tools for Effective Extension Service Delivery.” The event took place on Tuesday, September 3rd, and Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, at the Ibadan Business School, Old Bodija, Ibadan.

The training commenced with opening remarks from Mr. Kola Kazeem, the State Coordinator of the project, who represented Dr. Adebowale Akande, the Director General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency and Executive Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Agribusiness, International Cooperation and Development.

The workshop attracted 150 Extension Agents from the 33 local government areas of Oyo State, focusing on equipping them with modern tools and techniques for effective extension service delivery. The theme of the workshop highlighted the growing importance of digital platforms in revolutionizing agricultural extension services, ensuring that farmers receive timely and relevant information to enhance their productivity.

In addition to the Extension Agents, the training also included Civil servants from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Private Organization, YEAP, NG-CARES and selected Agricultural Extension students from LAUTECH, CRIN, UI, OYSCATECH, who were given special consideration. This inclusion underscores the organizers’ commitment to empowering the next generation of agricultural professionals with the skills necessary to drive sustainable development in the sector.

The event featured a series of interactive sessions, practical demonstrations, and discussions led by experts in the field of digital agricultural extension. Participants were introduced to various digital tools, mobile applications, and online platforms designed to enhance the delivery of extension services to farmers. These tools are expected to bridge the information gap between extension agents and farmers, ultimately leading to improved agricultural practices and increased yields.

Mr. Emmanuel Paul-Ebiai, Managi Director, Union Agric Services limited, expressed his gratitude to the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency and the World Bank for initiating the L-PRES project. He congratulated the beneficiaries who participated in the comprehensive 2-day training workshop, emphasizing that the skills acquired will revolutionize the livestock sector through innovative digital solutions. This, in turn, will significantly enhance livestock production and its value chain in the state.

To ensure the project’s sustainability, Mr. Emmanuel commended that the government harness the expertise of the trained beneficiaries by assigning them to local livestock farmers. This will create a vital link between farmers, stakeholders, and the government. Additionally, he suggested that the government provide the necessary tools and resources to support the beneficiaries in their new roles, making their work more efficient and effective.

By implementing these measures, the L-PRES project will have a lasting impact on the livestock sector, driving growth and development in Oyo State.”

Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, a beneficiary from Ibarapa Central, expressed his gratitude to the program organizers. He commended their efforts to boost livestock production, stating that the training will significantly enhance the knowledge of participants. If implemented effectively, he believes it will have a positive impact on the state.

Mr. Emmanuel encouraged fellow trainees to recognize the opportunity as a significant milestone. He also made recommendations to the government, suggesting regular training for extension agents and improved security measures. Additionally, he urged private organizations to support the government’s initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for sustainable development.”

Also, Mr. Olayinka Pelumi, a beneficiary of the L-PRES project, praised the organizers for their vision to transform the livestock sector. He noted that the training has equipped him with innovative solutions to tackle challenges facing livestock farmers. He encouraged fellow beneficiaries to leverage this knowledge to make a positive impact in their communities.

Mr. Pelumi also called on the government to provide ongoing support to extension agents, ensuring they stay updated on best practices. He emphasized the need for improved security to protect livestock investments. Furthermore, he urged private sector players to partner with the government, sharing resources and expertise to drive sustainable growth in the livestock industry.”

The training concluded with a call to action, urging all participants to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop in their respective localities and a certificate of participation was also issued to all participants. The organisers expressed their hope that this initiative would mark the beginning of a new era in agricultural extension services in Oyo State, contributing to the overall goal of boosting food security and economic growth.

The Oyo State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) continues to make significant strides in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving the livelihoods of farmers across the State.
