Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has shed light on the 36 state governors’ push for broader consultations on President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills. According to Makinde, the governors are seeking a more inclusive process to ensure that all stakeholders’ perspectives are considered, given the significant impact of the reforms.
Makinde clarified that he’s not against the reforms but emphasized the need for wider consultations. He explained that the National Economic Council (NEC) unanimously resolved that the bills should be withdrawn from the National Assembly to allow for broader discussions.
“The goal is alignment and inclusivity,” Makinde stated, highlighting the importance of considering all stakeholders’ views. He noted that the NEC’s recommendation for withdrawal aims to ensure that the final proposals are well-thought-out and beneficial to all.
The tax reform bills, which include the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, have sparked debates among stakeholders. Makinde acknowledged the concerns raised by various groups and reiterated the governors’ commitment to finding a solution that works for everyone.
In response to criticisms labeling him as opposed to the reforms, Makinde stated, “Some people are focusing on the messenger instead of the message. Our decision to seek consultation is about ensuring the best outcome for everyone.” He emphasized that the governors’ push for wider consultations is driven by a desire to create a more equitable and effective tax system.
During the media chat, Governor Makinde also expressed sorrow over the Ibadan funfair tragedy, which claimed the lives of 35 children, describing it as a monumental loss. He linked the incident, along with the Bodija explosion in January 2024, to a failure to implement adequate safety measures
