In a remarkable display of empathy and commitment to the welfare of Oyo State workers and pensioners, Governor Seyi Makinde has set a new benchmark by approving an ₦80,000 minimum wage for civil servants. This progressive move outshines the Federal Government’s ₦70,000 minimum wage and reflects the governor’s understanding of the economic realities faced by citizens.

On Friday, January 24, 2025, civil servants in Oyo State began receiving their January salaries, which included the newly implemented minimum wage.

Pensioners also experienced increased payouts, earning Governor Makinde widespread praise for his unwavering commitment to their well-being. Pensioners, who fondly refer to him as their “golden son,” expressed gratitude for the continuous improvements under his administration.
Before the implementation of the new minimum wage, Governor Makinde’s administration introduced a wage award to cushion the effects of inflation.

This timely intervention provided financial relief to workers and pensioners even when the minimum wage had not yet been effected, showcasing the governor’s proactive approach to governance.

This is not an isolated gesture of goodwill. Since the beginning of his administration, Governor Makinde has maintained a consistent track record of paying salaries and pensions on or before the 25th of each month. Beyond this, his administration has introduced additional incentives such as wage awards for civil servants and pensioners, 13th-month salaries for workers, and Christmas bonuses for pensioners.

Governor Makinde’s policies highlight a deep understanding of the socioeconomic challenges faced by the people of Oyo State. The decision to approve a minimum wage higher than the federal benchmark underscores his determination to ensure a decent standard of living for workers. This increment was complemented by a consequential adjustment, ensuring that all categories of workers benefited from the wage increase.

The governor’s approach to governance, marked by fiscal responsibility and people-centric policies, has earned him the trust and admiration of the workforce and retirees alike. By prioritizing timely salary payments and providing additional financial benefits, he has set an example of what it means to lead with compassion and foresight.

For pensioners, the increase in their monthly payments is more than just financial relief; it is a testament to the governor’s recognition of their contributions to the development of Oyo State. Unlike a previous administration that once referred to senior citizens as the “living dead,” Governor Makinde has restored their dignity and given them hope to live again. Many have lauded his administration for providing consistent support and reasons to celebrate during festive seasons.

Governor Makinde’s leadership continues to transform the socioeconomic landscape of Oyo State, reinforcing his legacy as a leader who prioritizes the welfare of the people.

As workers and pensioners reap the benefits of his administration’s policies, it is evident that his commitment to their well-being is unwavering.
Indeed, Governor Seyi Makinde is not just a leader but a compassionate father figure whose actions consistently speak louder than words. His administration’s policies have become a blueprint for good governance, setting a standard for other leaders to emulate.
