The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of tertiary institutions in Oyo State has suspended its indefinite strike action, effective immediately.
This decision comes after a productive meeting between the Rectors/Provost of tertiary institutions and JAC representatives, mediated by Platinum Consultants.
This was contained in a statement signed by Dr Kola Lawal, Chairman, JAC and secretary, Comrade Fatai Akeem Abiola, made available to newsmen on Thursday.
“We are pleased to announce that the indefinite strike action has been suspended, and academic activities will resume in all tertiary institutions in Oyo State
“This decision was made possible after a successful meeting with the management of tertiary institutions, where we reached an agreement on the implementation of the new minimum wage and the 25/35% salary increase.” The statement read.
The strike, which began on March 10, 2025, was called to demand the implementation of the new minimum wage and the 25/35% salary increase for staff of tertiary institutions in the state. After extensive discussions, the management of tertiary institutions in Oyo State agreed to implement the new minimum wage and salary increase, effective from the March 2025 salary payment.
“The agreement reached is a significant milestone in our efforts to improve the welfare of our members. We appreciate the commitment of the management of tertiary institutions to implement the new minimum wage and salary increase, and we look forward to a smooth implementation process.” It added.
Additionally, the arrears for the minimum wage consequential adjustment for January and February 2025, as well as the 25/35% salary increase spanning from January to December 2024, will be structured for payment in instalments within the current year, 2025.
The JAC has emphasized that the suspension of the strike action is contingent upon the strict adherence to the terms of the agreement. Any breach or delay in the implementation of the resolutions will result in an immediate and indefinite resumption of the strike action.
“We urge all parties to adhere strictly to the terms of the agreement, and we will continue to monitor the implementation process to ensure that our members’ interests are protected,” it read.
The leadership of JAC has expressed its appreciation to all parties who contributed to the resolution of this matter, including His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, for his worker-friendly approach and goodwill in ensuring that this matter was resolved amicably.
“We appreciate the intervention of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and his commitment to the welfare of workers in Oyo State.
“His leadership and dedication to resolving this matter have been instrumental in achieving this positive outcome.” It added.
