In a significant announcement for Muslim communities, The Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde revealed plans for the direct airlifting of Hajj pilgrims from the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, commencing in 2026. This initiative marks a pivotal step towards enhancing the travel experience for pilgrims, aiming to alleviate the need for extensive travel to other states for international flights.

Addressing the gathered crowd at the Oyo State Hajj Camp in Olodo, Lagelu Local Government Area, on Monday, Governor Makinde expressed his satisfaction with the preparations for the impending 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. He underscored his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of pilgrims and streamlining their travel processes. The governor’s declaration was met with enthusiasm and applause from the attendees, who are eager for the convenience this new airlift service promises.

“By the grace of God, starting from next year, our Hajj pilgrims will no longer need to travel to Lagos or Abuja for their flights. They will take off right here from the Ibadan airport,” Makinde announced, highlighting the government’s intent to fully utilize the state’s airport infrastructure. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the stress and difficulties associated with the pilgrimage.

Furthermore, the governor encouraged all prospective pilgrims to be exemplary representatives of Oyo State and Nigeria during their time in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He urged them to engage in prayers for the peace and continued development of the state, further emphasizing the spiritual aspect of the pilgrimage.

Sheikh Hashim Atere, the Chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), commended the state government’s efforts, acknowledging the proactive measures taken to ensure a smooth Hajj operation for the upcoming year. His remarks reflect the confidence in the arrangements made to support hundreds of participants expected to fly from Oyo State to Saudi Arabia.

As the preparations for the 2025 Hajj take shape, officials have confirmed that all necessary arrangements—including accommodation and transportation in Saudi Arabia—have been finalized for the welfare of the pilgrims. This year’s pilgrimage is poised to witness significant participation, setting a positive tone leading into the 2026 initiative.

The proposed direct airlift not only stands to bolster the capacity and reputation of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport but also promises to ease the journey for pilgrims from Oyo and neighboring states. With this strategic move, Governor Makinde is paving the way for a more accessible and enriching pilgrimage experience for future generations of Hajj pilgrims in Oyo State.
