Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde flagged off the 1st quarter Omituntun free medical mission.
Speaking at the flag-off of the 2025 Omituntun Free Medical Mission at the Ibadan North-East Local Government Secretariat on Tuesday, Governor Makinde emphasized that Oyo’s model, building functional Category 3 PHCs across its 351 electoral wards, has proven effective and scalable.
“We are happy that we can give the federal level our template. The template has worked in Oyo State and I am assured it would work at the federal level. Only recently, the Vice-President said the Federal Government plans to build 8,800 PHCs across the country. Before the Federal Government, we started the renovation and equipment of functional PHC facilities in all wards,” Makinde said.
The governor reaffirmed that his administration’s healthcare strategy is central to achieving broader development goals saying: “This government will continue to focus on a healthy population and tackling poverty in the state,” he stated.
Makinde also used the occasion to express appreciation to key stakeholders who have contributed to healthcare progress in Oyo State. “I want to thank Professor Temitope Alonge, Dr. Muideen Olatunji, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, and all our healthcare workers. They’ve done very well,” he said.
The Omituntun Medical Mission is a flagship outreach program that offers free medical services to residents. According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ajetunmobi, this year’s mission will follow a cluster model, with each location operating for three days, including post-surgical follow-up care.
She added that beneficiaries would be enrolled in the state’s health insurance scheme under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to ensure continuity of care.
Governor Makinde tied the healthcare achievements to the wider success of his administration across four pillars: education, health, security, and economic expansion. He highlighted recent improvements in students’ performance in national examinations and a monthly injection of N24 billion into the state’s economy via salaries, pensions, and Infrastructure projects.
“As of today, this government injects N24 billion into the Oyo State economy every four weeks, that is from the government alone. And we have created infrastructure to allow private businesses to thrive,” he said.
On security, Makinde declared that Oyo State had “won the war,” but stressed the government would continue to refine its security architecture. “We will not sleep; we will continue to tweak the architecture until everybody can sleep with their two eyes closed.”
Reflecting on his leadership style, Makinde emphasized accountability and a forward-looking approach. “Even in 2018, I had no business with what a particular government did not do.
“You don’t need anybody to tell you if a particular government performed or not. In 2019, we didn’t campaign based on the past but based on what we intended to do—and you trusted us,” Makinde said.
The governor praised residents for playing their part in maintaining societal stability, saying, “We can trace the stability we have been enjoying across Oyo State back to how you have been handling the homes.”
Earlier, Dr. Akin Fagbemi, Chairman of the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, lauded the administration for recent recruitments in the health sector, noting that Oyo had secured full accreditation for physiotherapy for the first time in 30 years.
The event drew some notable dignitaries including Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal, former Deputy Governor Hazeem Gbolarumi, Deputy Speaker Mohammed Fadeyi, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, Chief Judge Justice Iyabo Yerima, and other top government officials.
