Oyo State First Lady, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde, commemorated Menstrual Hygiene Day for the sixth consecutive year, hosting 792 female students from 66 schools across the state.

The event, themed “A Day Out with the Girls of Oyo State,” aimed to educate students on menstrual hygiene and promote confidence.

Mrs Makinde emphasized the importance of menstrual hygiene among female students in the state. She urged the girls to view their periods as a natural part of their femininity, rather than a source of embarrassment.

The First Lady tasked teachers across the state to prioritize the well-being of their students, particularly the girl child, during their menstrual period.

“Teachers should support the girls by ensuring they have resources to manage their menstruation with confidence and pride,” her words.

The Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Hon. Segun Olayiwola, called on residents to join the movement to make menstruation a normal part of life by 2030.

He urged everyone to raise their voices against stigmatization and support each other in creating a period-friendly world.

During the program, students learned about different types of sanitary products and how to maintain proper hygiene during their periods. The program included the distribution of sanitary pads and towels to students, along with cash gifts, to promote menstrual hygiene and support the girl child.

The event aimed to break the silence surrounding menstruation and promote awareness about menstrual hygiene practices.

The event drew dignitaries from various sectors, including the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, Honourable Members of the State House of Assembly, the Commissioner for Education, Mr. Olusegun Olayiwola, and the Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Faosat Joke Sanni.
