Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged Corps members to see their service year as a call to national duty, urging them to be agents of development and advocates of unity across Nigeria.
Makinde stated this during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2025 Batch B ‘Stream 1’ Corps members held on Friday at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp in Iseyin, Oyo State.
Represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, the governor described the NYSC scheme as a “symbol of national cohesion,” adding that corps members must live up to the ideals of the programme.
Makinde welcomed the Corps members to the ‘pacesetter state’, assuring them of a peaceful, purposeful, and fulfilling service year.
“You are not just guests here; you are partners in progress. We expect you to make meaningful contributions to the communities you’ll serve. I encourage you to explore its beauty, engage with our people, respect our customs, and contribute to its development,” he said.
The governor stressed the importance of discipline, integrity, and respect for cultural diversity, urging the Corps members to see their time in Oyo as an opportunity to be agents of development and build bridges across ethnic and religious divides.
“Your conduct this year will reflect your commitment to nation-building. Be conscious that you are ambassadors of peace, unity, and progress,” he said.
Highlighting the growing importance of economic independence, the governor encouraged corps members to embrace the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.
“In today’s Nigeria, self-reliance is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Many before you have become job creators through the NYSC platform. You, too, can chart your own path,” he said.
Reaffirming the state government’s commitment to corps members’ welfare, Makinde said he had instructed all relevant agencies to prioritise their safety and needs.
“Your security is non-negotiable. Every necessary measure has been put in place to protect you during your stay,” he assured.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the NYSC Oyo State Coordinator, Mr. Kayode Peters, expressed appreciation to Governor Makinde for his unwavering support for the NYSC scheme in the state.
The Oyo state coordinator noted that Oyo State has consistently ranked among the top in areas such as camp feeding and stakeholder engagement.
Peters urged the Corps members to embrace the rich culture and values of the Yoruba people and to see their service year not just as a statutory duty, but a life-changing opportunity.
“Remember those who have walked this path before you. They’ve paved the way for your own unique journey. Walk it with pride and purpose,” he added.
The Chief Judge of Oyo State, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Justice Kareem Adedokun, administered the oath of allegiance to the Corps members, comprising 876 males and 1,500 females.
The event was graced by top government officials, traditional leaders, and representatives of security agencies.
