Recent rumours suggesting that the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Oluseyi Makinde, alongside Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, is planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have been described as unfounded and misleading. Findings indicate that these claims are speculative, lack credible backing, and do not reflect the current political position or intentions of Governor Seyi Makinde.

As the recognised leader of the PDP in Oyo State and a key stabilising force within the party at the national level, Governor Makinde remains firmly rooted in the PDP, far from contemplating an exit, he is actively engaged in efforts aimed at repositioning, strengthening, and restoring the party’s cohesion amid ongoing both internaland external challenges.

Political observers noted that the PDP, just like many other large political organisations, has experienced periods of internal disagreement. However, Governor Makinde has consistently maintained that such moments call for leadership, dialogue, reconciliation and reform, not abandonment. His posture has been that of a bridge-builder, committed to internal reconciliation and institutional renewal, rather than political migration.
Contrary to the rumours, there has been no official or unofficial indication from Governor Seyi Makinde or any of his close political associates suggesting a move to the ADC or any other political platform. Sources close to the Oyo State Governor affirm that he considers the PDP not only his political home but also the most viable platform for deepening democratic governance and development-oriented leadership in Nigeria and the only party that can resist the APC dominance in the country.

This commitment was further underscored by recent high-level consultations within the party. A delegation of senior PDP stakeholders, led by the PDP chairman, Taminu Turaki SAN, recently paid a courtesy and strategic visit to former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. The meeting, which focused on the future of the PDP, provided an opportunity for party leaders to openly discuss the challenges facing the party and to reaffirm their collective resolve to rebuild and reposition the Party for future electoral contests.

At the meeting, there was a unanimous reiteration of passion, loyalty, and determination to strengthen the PDP rather than weaken it through defections. The engagement with former President Jonathan was widely seen as part of a broader reconciliation and stabilisation effort, aimed at drawing from the wisdom of elder statesmen and reinforcing internal unity.

Governor Makinde’s political trajectory further reinforces the improbability of defection. Since assuming office in 2019, he has emerged as one of the most prominent PDP governors in the country, earning national recognition for governance anchored on fiscal discipline, infrastructure development, workers’ welfare, and inclusive leadership. His administration’s performance has not only strengthened the PDP’s standing in Oyo State but has also positioned him as a credible voice within the national party structure.

Makinde, a man who has consistently advocated party reforms and internal democracy can’t abandon the platform he is actively working to reform. Instead, his actions suggest a long-term commitment to ensuring that the PDP regains its strength, public trust, and electoral competitiveness. He have continued to engage with PDP structures and processes, reinforcing the position that ongoing consultations are about resolving every internal issues, not exiting the party.

The narrative that Governor Seyi Makinde is leaving the PDP for another political party is false and should be treated as mere political speculation rather than fact. The Oyo State Governor remains a central figure in the PDP’s rebuilding process and is firmly on the path of party consolidation, not defection. As events continue to unfold, his consistent message remains clear: the challenges within the PDP will be addressed from within, through unity, dialogue, and purposeful leadership.
