In a decisive move to curb the growing menace of fire outbreaks across Oyo State, the state government has approved the procurement of seven brand-new fire trucks and the recruitment of over 100 additional firefighters, signalling a major boost to fire safety and emergency preparedness.
Fire incidents have continued to threaten lives, property and economic activities in several parts of the state, with many outbreaks traced to preventable lapses in safety practices. In response, the Oyo State Government is shifting from a largely reactive emergency response model to a more proactive, prevention-driven fire safety strategy.
The reforms, which place strong emphasis on preparedness, public awareness and institutional capacity, form the foundation of the state’s renewed approach to fire management. Central to this effort is Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval for strategic investments in modern firefighting equipment and skilled manpower to strengthen the Oyo State Fire Service Agency.
According to the government, the acquisition of the seven new fire trucks is aimed at significantly improving emergency response time and expanding fire coverage across both urban centres and rural communities. The additional vehicles are expected to enhance the operational reach of the Fire Service and ensure quicker intervention during emergencies.
Speaking on the development, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency and Special Adviser to the Governor on Fire Reform, Hon. Moroof Akinwande, said the administration remains committed to equipping the agency with the tools and personnel required for effective fire prevention and control.
He disclosed that more than 100 newly recruited firefighters are currently undergoing intensive training to sharpen their skills, professionalism and readiness to respond to emergencies. Akinwande added that the recruitment drive is part of a broader reform agenda to address manpower gaps and improve service delivery.
The fire service boss further revealed that approval for the procurement of the seven firefighting trucks was granted in December 2025, noting that contractors have already been mandated to deliver the vehicles to the agency.
He explained that the additional trucks would drastically reduce response time, improve coverage and enhance the agency’s capacity to handle multiple incidents simultaneously.
Reinforcing the government’s preventive approach, Akinwande stressed that fire safety is a shared responsibility, urging residents, businesses and industries to adopt basic safety measures to prevent outbreaks.
He advised the public to ensure proper electrical wiring and use of appropriate sockets for appliances, install functional fire extinguishers, and ensure occupants are trained on their usage. He also encouraged households and organisations to create clear escape routes, conduct regular fire drills, and handle inflammable materials with utmost care.
Overall, the Oyo State Government’s renewed fire safety drive underscores the importance of prevention through preparedness, public enlightenment and strengthened emergency services, as authorities reaffirmed that collective vigilance remains the most effective safeguard against fire disasters and their devastating consequences.
