Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has inspected the newly installed runway lighting system at Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, describing the development as a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to upgrade the facility to international status.
In a statement shared on his verified social media platforms following the late-night inspection, the governor said the installation of the lighting system forms a key component of the airport’s ongoing infrastructure upgrade.

“Last night, we inspected the lighting system installed on the new runway of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan. This is part of the work being done to upgrade the airport to an international one,” Makinde stated.
The newly installed airfield lighting system is expected to enhance operational safety at the airport by enabling aircraft to land and take off at night as well as during periods of low visibility.
The lighting upgrade is part of a broader modernisation project aimed at ensuring the airport meets international aviation standards.

As part of the ongoing works, the runway is being extended from about 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres and widened from 45 metres to 60 metres to accommodate larger, wide-body aircraft typically used for international flights.
Other components of the project include upgrades to taxiways, apron facilities and emergency response infrastructure.
When completed, the airport upgrade is expected to position Ibadan as a major aviation hub in southwestern Nigeria, improving regional connectivity, attracting investment and supporting economic growth in Oyo State and beyond.
