The completion of the Iyaganku–NTC road by the Oyo State Government led by Governor Seyi Makinde has brought significant relief and renewed optimism to residents, commuters and business owners along one of the most strategic corridors in Ibadan. The fully rehabilitated road has continued to attract widespread commendation, particularly from residents, commuters within the Iyaganku axis who have long endured its poor condition.
Beyond serving residential communities, the road provides access to several landmark institutions that play vital roles in the civic, economic and social life of the state. These include the Ibadan Tennis Club, Olubadan Stadium, Bank of Industry, Alayande School of Science, Oyo State Ministry of Education, Nigerian Bar Association and the Nigerian Tobacco Companyand many more. The strategic importance of this axis underscores the need for durable and flood-resistant infrastructure.
For many years, the road had remained in a deplorable state, characterised by potholes, poor drainage and persistent flooding during the rainy season. These challenges severely affected mobility, discouraged business activities and posed safety risks to road users. The comprehensive rehabilitation, which included the construction of standard drainage systems and improved road structure, is therefore widely regarded as a timely and impactful intervention.
During recent interactions with people in the area, Elder Wole, a long-standing mechanic, expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts. He explained that flooding had consistently disrupted their work and reduced customer access to workshops, especially during heavy rainfall. According to him, the newly constructed drainage channels have already begun to address the perennial flooding challenge, creating a more conducive environment for businesses to thrive. He further appealed for the installation of street lighting to complement the project, noting that improved illumination would enhance security and extend business activities into the evening.
Similarly, Mrs Adedayo, a food vendor who has operated in front of the NTC area for over a decade, described the intervention as the most comprehensive road project she has witnessed since establishing her business in that axis. She observed that previous attempts were largely limited to patching damaged portions, which often deteriorated within a short time. She expressed confidence that the current project would endure, particularly because of the attention given to drainage and structural quality. She added that the elimination of flooding has already begun to attract more customers and improve business stability.
In the same vein, Mr Adegoke Olayiwola, a staff of the Ministry of Education, commended the government’s commitment to infrastructure renewal. He described the corridor as a critical route for workers, students and professionals who rely on the road to access institutions and workplaces. He emphasized that the improved road has enhanced connectivity, reduced travel time and boosted productivity across the axis.
While praising the government, he also encouraged the government to strengthen public communication ahead of future projects. According to him, early notification would help residents and commuters plan effectively and minimize disruption.
The completion of the Iyaganku–NTC road reflects a broader commitment to sustainable urban infrastructure and strategic development. By addressing flooding, improving connectivity and enhancing access to key institutions, the project has restored confidence among residents and commuters.
