Studies have shown that driving outside of daylight hours is usually more dangerous, as this period accounts for more fatal accidents on the highway. However, the role of smart lighting solutions in the transformation of modern cities has gathered a lot of momentum in the past years. In Oyo State, the risk of accidents and serious injuries has been greatly reduced by lighting the streets and other public areas. This initiative has become essential for safe driving at night, as it improves visibility and minimises the risk of accidents on our main roads.
For instance, the installation of the street lights along Idi ape- Basorun road in Ibadan has improved safety for drivers, riders, pedestrians and its residents. Undoubtedly, excellent street lighting would reduce the number of accidents on this route.
The statistics of fatal and serious road accidents along the route is expected to reduce after the installation of the long lasting and good quality street lights by the administration of His Excellency Governor Seyi Makinde. It will enhance a huge boost to the night time economy in the area and also across Oyo State at large. Already, the night time economy is booming across the country in places like Lagos.
The importance of street lights for commercial purpose is clear, the possibility of a longer trading hour will help traders extend their time at their stalls and will also increase their revenue and encourage traders and artisans in the State.
Public safety is one of the major concerns of the Oyo State government and by installing street lights on this road, the safety of the masses is enhanced, a safer space is created for women who constantly battle the fear of sexual harassment and also passers-by who are scared of been kidnapped.
With the state being keen on investing in street lights across the area, criminal activities like robberies, motorcycle and vehicle theft around the Idi-ape – Bashorun axis, which is mostly perpetrated under the cover of darkness, will be extinguished and thereby promoting a peaceful and theft free community.
