The Wife of the Oyo State Governor and First Lady of the State, Engr. (Mrs.) Tamunominini Makinde speaks on gender-based violence and the roles played by her office and the Oyo State Government to curb it.

 

This was at the official launching of the first National Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Harmful Practices and Obstetrics Fistula Landscape Analysis Report in Nigeria by National United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with Global Affairs, Canada.

 

The event which took place at the State House Banquet Hall, Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, had the First Lady gave a goodwill message, acknowledging the efforts of the UNFPA toward eliminating gender-based violence in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.

 

She noted that her office had also been active towards the cause, highlighting activities such as the commissioning of an Oyo State-owned Sexual and Assault Referral Center in Ibadan in May 2021, the public presentation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law in February 2022, and the introduction of a toll-free hotline for indigenes and residents of Oyo State to report rape and gender-based violence cases.

 

She went ahead to note that statistics have proven that girls and women are mostly the victims of the ugly acts, however hope that the new landscape analysis report will further help eliminate gender-based violence and other harmful practices against the girl child and women in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.

 

Tamunominini Makinde is a mother of three children, of which two are females.
