The Oyo State High Court has rejected all of Rauf Olaniyan’s arguments against his impeachment as the former deputy governor of Oyo State.
Recall that the former deputy governor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, had previously criticized Justice Munta Abimbola, the state’s chief judge, over the formation of the seven-person panel that had recommended that he be removed from office.
Speaking in court through his attorney, Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), Olaniyan said that the panel established to look into the accusations made against him was paid to do what they did and called it a hoax.
The trial judge, Ladiran Akintola, however, decided on July 15, 2022, that the claimant’s original summons was only legislative and not judicial, in accordance with Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as altered).
According to him, there was no error in the impeachment procedure by the lawmakers or all the defendants. In addition, the court advised the lawmakers to proceed with the impeachment procedure, noting that they had largely satisfied with the requirements of Section 188 of the constitution on the removal process.
Following the development, the court again this morning dismissed the case instituted by the former Deputy governor.
The court held that all the processes leading to the impeachment and indeed the impeachment are lawful and proper.
