In a significant milestone for Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde commissioned the first phase of the 11MW Oyo State Independent Power Project (IPP) this morning. The project, a private investment by Elektron Energy, is expected to increase the state’s electricity supply by 14%.

Oyo State currently receives an average of 80MW from the national grid, and the completion of this project will help bridge the energy deficit in the state. The project, which commenced in December 2021, faced a one-year delay in obtaining clearance from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

However, with the recent constitutional amendment granting states the authority to generate, distribute, and transmit electricity, Oyo State is now empowered to make its own decisions on energy projects. Governor Makinde is inviting more investors in the energy sector to take advantage of the ready market in Oyo State.

The 11MW IPP is a hybrid power solution, comprising 10MW gas-fired power generation and 1MW PV solar solution.² The project is expected to serve government facilities, including schools, hospitals, and the State Secretariat, as well as provide power to industries and homes.

This development is a significant step towards achieving sustainable energy solutions in Oyo State, and Governor Makinde’s administration is committed to providing a conducive environment for investors in the energy sector.
