As Nigeria marks its 64th independence anniversary, the nation is torn between nostalgia for the past and despair for the present. The country’s journey since October 1, 1960, has been a mix of achievements and setbacks, progress and regression. This piece reflects on the nation’s trajectory, highlighting the joys of yesterday and the sorrows of today.

The Golden Years (1960s-1980s)

Nigeria’s early years were marked by optimism and promise. The nation boasted:

Free Education: Quality education was accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic background.

Strong Economy: Nigeria’s economy thrived, with a stable currency (Naira) and competitive exchange rates (1 USD ≈ 0.75 NGN).

Employment Opportunities: Jobs were plentiful, and the government invested heavily in infrastructure development.

National Unity: Nigerians felt a sense of belonging, with ethnic and regional differences set aside for national progress.

Cultural Renaissance: The arts flourished, with iconic musicians (Fela Kuti, Osibisa), writers (Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe), and filmmakers (Hubert Ogunde).

The Decline (1990s-2000s)

However, the country’s fortunes began to decline:

Economic Downturn: Corruption, mismanagement, and globalization led to economic stagnation.

Education in Shambles: Funding for education dwindled, and the sector suffered from neglect.

Unemployment Epidemic: Job opportunities dwindled, leaving millions without stable income.

Ethnic and Religious Tensions: National unity gave way to divisions, fueled by politics and resource competition.

Infrastructure Decay: Roads, healthcare, and public services crumbled.

The Current Reality (2010s-Present)

Today, Nigeria faces:

Insecurity: Boko Haram, banditry, and kidnapping threaten lives and livelihoods.

Economic Hardship: Naira’s value has plummeted (1 USD to over 1,550 NGN), and inflation soared.

Unemployment Crisis: Over 20 million Nigerians are jobless, with many more underemployed.

Education in Crisis: Schools struggle with funding, infrastructure, and quality.

Healthcare Challenges: Nigeria’s healthcare system is plagued by underfunding and brain drain.

Mourning Today

As Nigeria celebrates 64 years of independence, the mood is somber. Citizens lament:

Lost Opportunities: Squandered resources, unfulfilled promises, and wasted potential.

Leadership Failure: Successive governments’ inability to address pressing issues.

National Disunity: Deepening divisions along ethnic, regional, and religious lines.

Celebrating Yesterday

Despite the challenges, Nigerians still cherish memories of:

National Pride: Achievements in sports (e.g., football, athletics), music, and arts.

Resilience: The nation’s ability to weather storms and adapt.

Cultural Heritage: Rich traditions, languages, and customs.

The Way Forward

To reclaim Nigeria’s lost glory, citizens must:

Demand Accountability: Hold leaders responsible for their actions.

Foster National Unity: Emphasize shared values and interests.

Invest in Education: Revitalize the education sector.

Diversify the Economy: Encourage entrepreneurship, innovation, and industrialization.

Prioritize Healthcare: Strengthen the healthcare system.

As Nigeria navigates its 64th year, it’s essential to reflect on the past, acknowledge the present’s challenges, and work towards a brighter future. The celebration of yesterday must inspire the transformation of today.
