Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has approved the payment of minimum wage arrears and other outstanding entitlements owed to workers at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

The governor made the announcement on Monday during the inauguration of the Governing Board of the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Agodi, Ibadan.

Makinde said the approval fulfilled the commitment he made to the institution’s workforce during his visit on September 30, 2024, noting that the delay in paying the arrears was due only to necessary administrative processes.

“I have signed the approval,” the governor declared. “Our workers deserve clarity and fairness, and I am glad that the arrears and other outstanding benefits will now be settled. When the welfare of health workers is secure, the entire system becomes more stable and productive.”

While inaugurating the new governing board, the governor charged its members to justify the confidence reposed in them by delivering meaningful reforms that would reposition the teaching hospital.

Makinde directed the board to ensure that the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital complex in Oyo is fully revamped and functional within the next 12 months.

“We are giving you a clear mandate. The Oyo annex must be revived and operational within a year,” he said. “Healthcare delivery is central to our development agenda, and we cannot achieve our goals without a teaching hospital system that runs on efficiency, modern infrastructure, and accountability.”

He also assured that concerns recently raised by LAUTECH lecturers regarding a proposed industrial action would be addressed, noting that his administration remains committed to proactive engagement.

“We are already dealing with the issues raised by the unions,” he added. “A strike is unnecessary when dialogue is ongoing. This government has always prioritised workers’ welfare, and we will continue to do so sustainably.”

Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated board, Chairman Professor Banji Oyelaran expressed appreciation to the governor for the confidence reposed in the team, pledging transparency, diligence, and excellence.

He described the governor’s immediate approval of the outstanding arrears as a boost to staff morale and a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to peace and development within the institution.

Professor Oyelaran revealed that the board had already drafted a strategic plan that will guide reforms at the hospital over the coming years.

He said the plan includes a comprehensive facelift of the LAUTECH system, refurbishment of critical units such as the ICU, upgrades to outdated equipment, and the establishment of digital records and an electronic medical system.

“What applies globally must begin to apply at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital,” he said. “In one year, as directed by His Excellency, we intend to present a fully transformed, ICT-driven teaching hospital with world-class human capital and modern service standards.”

In a separate development during the ceremony, Governor Makinde announced that the state government will once again pay a 13th-month salary to workers in December 2025.

He noted that the tradition, which began when he assumed office in 2019, forms part of his administration’s broader commitment to workers’ welfare and financial stability in the state.

“Since 2019, we have kept our word. Every December, our workers receive a 13th-month salary,” he said. “I am pleased to confirm today that the 2025 edition is assured. When you value workers, service delivery improves across all sectors.”

The newly inaugurated governing board is chaired by Professor Banji Oyelaran. Other members include:

Mr Olarinde Oyelade, Community Representative;
