The Oyo State Government has announced a week-long programme of activities, legacy projects and recognitions to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the state.
Chairman of the Oyo @ 50 Planning Committee, Honourable Saheed Akinade Fijabi, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Ibadan, described the golden jubilee celebration as people-centred, non-partisan and focused on development.
According to him, the celebration will run from January 26 to February 3, 2026, with activities already underway. These include a spelling bee and inter-secondary school football competitions.
Fijabi said the programme lineup features religious services, cultural exhibitions, a public lecture titled “Consolidating the Legacy, Navigating the Present and Reimagining the Future,” as well as an awards and dinner night.
He added that the anniversary will recognise outstanding individuals in various sectors such as sports, health and the arts.
He further revealed that the state government has approved the establishment of a Hall of Fame within the Secretariat to permanently honour individuals who have contributed significantly to the development of Oyo State, assured residents that all expenditures for the celebration would be guided by prudence and accountability.
Organisers of the event said activities lined up include an opening ceremony at the University of Ibadan Conference Centre, a statewide health outreach, cultural film screenings, a carnival procession from Mapo to Adamasingba Stadium, a symposium, religious programmes, as well as youth, women and school outreach initiatives.
The celebration will climax on February 3 with a gala night and awards ceremony at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Ibadan, where past governors and other distinguished personalities will be honoured.
Organisers have assured residents of adequate security and called for widespread public participation, describing the event as a celebration by and for the people of Oyo State.
