Cleanliness on its own is a form of adornment, beautification and a means of attraction. Regardless the quality of contents of a material, place or even a person, their appearance defines them more.
Oyo State under the administration of Engr. Seyi Makinde has witnessed several facelifts, innovations, infrastructural developments and advancements amongst several other newness. Various sectors in the State have one or more testimonies to share of the midas touch of Seyi Makinde in their jurisdictions; different classes of people have different reasons to sing his praises; the Seyi Makinde administration has become a symbol of hope and a template for good governance in the State and beyond.
However, one filth has been noted to characterize the State, particularly its Capital, and that has been the issue of solid waste management; not peculiar with this administration though, but proper attention to it has been part of the expectations bestowed on the benevolence of this administration.
Ibadan, the Capital of the Pace Setter State has unrepentantly been noted for dirtiness and illicit dumping of solid wastein places demeaning to the 2nd fastest growing city in Africa.
As aged as this particular undoing of the State has been, it has been a subject of controversy trailing other achievements and developments of the State under this present administration of Engr. Seyi Makinde, conspicuously like an oil stain on a white garment.
Several complaints, reports and submissions were made both by lovers and supporters of good governance and deliberate critics of the present administration via several platforms such as the feedback platforms, articles and radio programmes even alongside some conspiracy theories.
Proven once again to be a listening governor who pays attention to the concerned and the critics alike to improve on the activities for the betterment of the entire populace, The Governorlike other times, has stepped up again to this call, starting from the purchase of 1,000 trolley bins, 15 tricycle machines, and an amphibious excavator through the World Bank-Assisted Project Intervention and with counterpart funding from the Oyo State Government, for proper evacuation and dumping of solid waste in the State.
To complement this, the Governor announced a new waste management architecture, disengaged the former handlers of solid waste in the State (giving them an opportunity to reapply to prove competence) and contracted a new waste management consultant.
Part of the new development is the automation of processes from registration, identification, verification, payment, and dumping of the wastes.
This new architecture also plans to consider the poor whereby they wouldn’t need to pay to dispose wastes while the fee will be very affordable for others. This also includes sensitizing the people about the processes of the new scheme for cooperation for ultimate effectiveness.
Added to all these will be the allocation of 330 Environmental Health Officers who will be responsible for each Local Government Area in the State, providing an immediate locality monitoring structure.
With the advent of all of these, Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s beautiful works and development in Oyo State would be complemented and adorned with a clean and appealing layout.
The government is however urged to provide more dump sites for ease and sustainability.
Any observer can deduce that all these developments that are beginning to manifest in recent times are part of the roadmap of Engr. Seyi Makinde for a sustainable Oyo State, considering the pace of the turn out of events from the purchase of necessary equipment to the appointment of a new consultant to oversee the waste management of the State, citizens only need to be patient, trust and support these processes for the attainment of the common goal of a sustainable and healthy Oyo State. Residents of towns all over Oyo state are encouraged to cooperate with the appointed and employed officials in charge of these solid wastes, as well as the Oyo State Government at large, by rendering every possible service and adhering to the State’s waste management guidelines such as complying with registration, having wastes properly bagged or binned, and placed in the appropriate places for pick up.
With these, Oyo State will increase its attraction to investors and tourists, thereby improving the State’s economy.
