Afenifere Ipinle Oyo
The Afenifere Ipinle Oyo, the Oyo State chapter of the pan-Yoruba sociopolitical organisation, Afenifere, has declared its support for the re-election of the state governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, stating that it has directed all its members across the 33 local governments of the state to mobilise voters for the governor.
The organisation cited the good performance of the governor in the last four years and his membership of Afenifere as the reasons for the endorsement, adding that it has also directed its members to vote for all candidates, who are Afenifere members, at all levels.
This was as it discussed and reiterated that restructuring remained top on the agenda and one of the ways the myriad of challenges facing Nigeria could be surmounted.
According to the statement receiver by Oyo News, members of Afenifere Ipinle Oyo have also been directed to only support individuals who are ready to effect the restructuring of Nigeria.
A statement signed by the chairman, Afenifere Ipinle Oyo, Dr. Gbola Adetunji, which was made available to newsmen in Ibadan, on Friday, following a meeting of the group at the residence of its chairman, said the meeting was in furtherance of its desire to ensure that the people “are properly guided as we approach the general elections.”
The meeting was attended by the executives of the organisation and the chairmen and secretaries of Afenifere Ipinle Oyo in all the 33 local government areas.
According to the statement, the Afenifere Ipinle Oyo called on the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria to put an end to the suffering Nigerians are going through with regards to fuel scarcity and the unavailability of the new Naira notes.
It also encouraged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies to do everything possible to make the 2023 general elections hitch-free, just as it charged the citizenry to vote and be peaceful before, during and after the elections.
The statement read in part: “In furtherance of its desire to ensure that our people are properly guided as we approach this year’s general elections, Afenifere Ipinle Oyo met at the residence of its chairman, Dr. (Otunba) Gbola Adetunji in Ibadan.
“Issues relating to social, economic, agriculture, security and politics in the way they affect or are likely to affect Yorubaland were discussed extensively.
“Restructuring was top on the agenda of what was considered as the way to solve the myriad of problems confronting Nigeria.
“Among the issues that attracted attention – and were comprehensively discussed – were the difficulties people are going through in getting fuel and in getting the new currency notes.
“After an extensive discussion, the meeting resolved as follow:
“Since Restructuring is the main thing that Afenifere holds sacrosanct, candidates that are ready to effect the concept – Restructuring – are the ones members of the organisation are ready to support in the forthcoming elections.
“The meeting considered the performance of Governor Seyi Makinde in the last four years and the fact that he is a member of Afenifere. For this reason, the meeting expressed unflinching support for him and thereby endorsed him for his bid for a second term.
“We have mandated our members in all the 33 local government areas to mobilise voters to support Governor Seyi Makinde in his second term ambition. We also mandated our members to vote for all candidates who are members of Afenifere at any level.
“The meeting expressed displeasure over what Nigerians are going through presently in their attempts to get fuel and new currency notes. It, therefore, called on the authorities concerned, especially President Muhammadu Buhari and the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, to urgently put an end to sufferings of Nigerians on the two items.
“Afenifere Ipinle Oyo urged qualified voters to go out and vote. They are urged to be peaceful and ensure that we have successful elections.
“The meeting also called on INEC and security agencies to ensure that the elections are conducted in a manner that will produce free, fair and credible elections.”
