Very few women have maximized their roles as the wife of the Governor of a State in Nigeria; and amongst the few who maximized it are mostly those who were extravagant with the office, involving in scandals, privatisation, nepotism and embezzlement of public funds, and raising exuberant children.

Amongst the few who have lived a very worthy profile both prior and whilst in public office is the wife of the Oyo State Governor; Engineer Tamunomini Olufunke Makinde.

Though still a short while in office, but almost equivalent to a political term just as her husband, the Ijaw woman has done so much with her office as the First Lady of Oyo State; ranging from advocating for children and other women in the State and Nigeria at large, to philanthropy and supporting her husband’s administration.

Ominini Makinde is known to have a very successful career prior and outside politics having graduated with double first-class honors (BBA/MBA) from Thomas University, Houston, Texas, in the United States of America, and runs a very successful engineering firm; which poses that just like her husband, she is in the space to give back to the community, just as she has shown with various philanthropic acts.

One particular trend of actions have always set out the democratic Queen of Oyo State despite her status, and that is her visits, hosting, giftings, and advocating towards the minors, vulnerable and less privileged in the society.

Most recently, the mother of two females and a male took an opportunity to speak on gender-based violence at the launching of the first National Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, Harmful Practices and Obstetrics Fistula Landscape Analysis Report in Nigeria at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja where she identified according to statistics that girls and women are mostly the victims of the subject of discussion, and equally noted that the Analysis Report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will further help eliminate the act against the vulnerable persons.

Engr. Tamunominini Makinde has also through her office effected the Commissioning of an Oyo

State-owned Sexual and Assault Referral Center in Ibadan; made a public presentation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law; and introduced a toll-free hotline for indigenes and residents in Oyo State to report rape and gender-based violence cases.

There is no way we would talk of The Seyi Makinde Family as An Exemplary Symbol of

Leadership without acknowledging what should be termed the efforts of the wife and the mother in the twenty-two year old marriage (22 years), to achieve such a template serving as a model.

It is therefore safe to humorously say that posterity would have judged us all if we hadn’t voted in her husband, as he told her that posterity will judge her if she hadn’t married him when he proposed to her.

We therefore hope to see this couple and family continue in leadership as models of Oyo State, and Nigeria at large while Ominini Makinde continues as a quintessential feminine model.
