The recent bandit attack in Oloka village in Oyo has once again brought the challenge of insecurity in Oyo State into sharp focus. The incident, which led to the loss of innocent lives and heightened anxiety among residents, underscores the growing threat posed by armed criminal elements who exploit forest routes and border communities to carry out violent operations.
The attack, believed to be the handiwork of cross-border bandits, follows a disturbing pattern of incursions into areas previously known for peace and stability. Beyond the immediate human tragedy, such attacks can disrupt economic activities, discourage farming and commercial pursuits, and erode public confidence in safety and governance.
Reacting swiftly, Governor Seyi Makinde condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as a direct assault on the peace and security of Oyo State. He reassured residents that his administration will not allow any criminal elements to take advantage of any part of the state, reiterating that the protection of lives and property remains a core priority of his administration.
Demonstrating leadership beyond official statements, Governor Makinde paid an on-the-spot visit last Friday, 16th January, 2026 to the affected community. During the visit, he met with villagers, community leaders and families of the deceased, offering words of condolence and reassurance. In a show of empathy and commitment, the governor announced a comprehensive support package for the victims and the community.
He approved a sum of ₦5 million each for the families of those who lost their lives in the attack and also promised full educational scholarships for the children of the deceased, covering their education from primary school through tertiary institutions. This intervention, he noted, was aimed at cushioning the impact of the tragedy and securing the future of the affected children.
In addition to immediate relief, the governor unveiled long-term infrastructural and security-focused commitments for the community. These include the construction of the Ikoyi-Ile to Oloka Village road to improve access and economic activity, the provision of telecommunication network services, and the supply of potable water to improve living conditions for residents.
Recognising the link between infrastructure and security, Governor Makinde also promised the installation of streetlights across the village to enhance visibility and deter criminal activities, particularly at night. Furthermore, he disclosed plans to formally write to the Chief of Army Staff to request the establishment of an Army base in the community, a move expected to strengthen security presence and deter future attacks.
Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Makinde has consistently maintained that security is the bedrock of sustainable development. In line with this belief, his administration has adopted a comprehensive, intelligence-driven approach to tackling insecurity across Oyo State.
A key component of this strategy is the strengthening of Amotekun, the SouthWest regional security outfit. The Oyo State Government has continued to provide logistical and operational support to Amotekun and every other security agencies in the state including the Nigeria Police Force, the military, the Department of State Services and others.
Following the attack, additional security personnel were deployed to the affected areas, patrols were intensified and calm was gradually restored. Investigations are ongoing, with security agencies expressing confidence that those responsible will be apprehended and brought to justice.
The government has also established joint security bases at strategic border locations, particularly along major entry points into the state. These bases function as forward-response centres designed to deter criminal movements, curb kidnappings and ensure rapid intervention when threats arise.
To further enhance early detection and response, the Makinde’s led administration has promised to invest in aerial surveillance and modern security technologies, to enable security agencies to monitor forests, highways and other difficult terrains often exploited by criminal groups.
Beyond government action, Governor Makinde has repeatedly emphasised that security is a shared responsibility. He has consistently urged residents to remain vigilant and to support security agencies by reporting suspicious activities within their communities.
In reinforcing this message, the governor often reminds citizens: “If you see something, say something.” “If you see something, say something”and by providing a reliable toll-free emergency line 615, the government is reinforcing its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives, securing communities and sustaining peace across Oyo State.
